Activities around Ord
Ord house has a feeling of remoteness being four miles down a single track road but it is also convenient for the south Skye loop of Ord beach, Tokavaig, Tarskavaig, and Achnacloich which have some of the most splendid, unspoilt bays on Skye where whales, dolphins, otters and seals may be found. For the walking enthusiast, stunning walks begin outside the front door and for the expert climber the Cuillin Range is only a short drive or boat trip away.
Ord House is situated on the edge of the Coille Togabhaig National Nature Reserve where otters, red deer and golden eagles are regularly seen. Ord house has its own slip way, shore road and beach which is a site of special scientific interest for its flora and geology. The bay offers safe swimming, snorkelling, wonderful sailing, kayaking and boating opportunities.
Fishing, cycling, bird watching are available. The land is an inspiration to many local artists and there are numerous galleries, studios and exhibitions where the art enthusiast can meet the artist or purchase original works. Top quality restaurants and local bars with live, traditional music are only a short drive away.
For the more adventurous, via a short ferry crossing, the wonderful white sands of Morar may be visited or the unspoilt mountains of Knoydart can be explored. The awe inspiring pass to Applecross may be taken and the famous gardens of Inverewe can be reached within a day. Locally the Clan Donald Centre with its wonderful Gardens and Museum of the Isles at Armadale (see www.clandonald.com ) are highly recommended.
Shopping, cafes, restaurants, bars and sailing can be found in the nearby picturesque village of Plockton. The local Sabhal Mor Ostaig has quality films and international guest musicians. If it is a romantric retreat or adventure, Skye has something for all and as Alexander Smith observed :-
